The ‘Jitume’ model at Lokichar Sub County Hospital in Turkana South has transformed HIV Prevention, Care, and Treatment by overcoming geographical barriers and stigma. Rooted in the Swahili concept of “sacrifice,” the model has achieved remarkable results, including a 100% Viral Load suppression rate among Female Sex Workers and 94% among the general population. A dedicated clinician’s purchase of a motorbike, ‘CCC-DICE,’ facilitates home visits for patient follow-up, leading to life-changing outcomes like a successful Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission case. The healthcare team goes above and beyond, conducting late-night visits to reach key populations and creatively engaging clients to ensure continuous care. The initiative has also seen the formation of the ‘Apiaro Ladies’ Community Anti-Retroviral Therapy Group for Female Sex Workers, providing essential resources and health education. The ‘Jitume’ model exemplifies how commitment and innovation can make a significant impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
