In Kenya, despite the informal sector comprising 80% of the workforce, health insurance coverage among these workers remains low due to systemic barriers such as complex enrollment processes, lack of information, and distrust in formal institutions. As the government advances Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Community Health Promoters (CHPs) play a crucial role in addressing these challenges. The government’s network of over 107,000 CHPs, who are embedded within communities, offers a unique opportunity to drive Social Health Insurance (SHI) adoption by providing culturally appropriate health education, demystifying enrollment processes, and fostering trust. However, tailored strategies are still needed to extend their reach, especially in urban middle-class areas.
